Eight goals in five matches. A hat-trick on the opening day. A goal in every game he has played. And now, heading into the quarterfinals, Lionel Messi is the outright favourite for the Golden Boot at 2.20 — overtaking Kylian Mbappé, who had held the top spot on the board for most of the group stage. The race for the World Cup’s top scorer has crystallised into a three-man contest with Erling Haaland also on seven, and Harry Kane lurking on six. Here is where it stands, what the numbers say, and where the value sits for Canadian bettors ahead of the final three rounds.

The gap between Messi and Mbappé is narrower than the one-goal lead suggests. Mbappé is priced at 2.40 despite trailing by a goal because France are the outright tournament favourites at 2.80 — meaning Mbappé is expected to play more matches, with more opportunities. Messi’s Argentina are the third favourite at 4.90, and their quarterfinal opponent, Switzerland, have conceded just three goals all tournament. The market is pricing in the likelihood that Mbappé has more runway.

The value angle — where’s the Canadian bettor’s edge?

Haaland at 8.50 is the number that catches my eye. He has seven goals — one behind Messi, level with Mbappé — and four of those have been match-winning goals, including the brace that stunned Brazil. Norway face England on Saturday in Miami, and England’s defensive crisis (Quansah suspended, Henderson out of tournament, Reece James doubtful) opens the door for a multi-goal Haaland performance. If Haaland scores twice against England and Norway reach the semi-final, he is level with or ahead of Messi at significantly longer odds.

The risk: Norway are 15.0 to win the tournament. If they lose to England, Haaland’s race is over. But at 8.50 — compared to Messi’s 2.20 for one more goal — the risk-reward favours the Norwegian.

Example: A C$15 each-way play — C$15 on Messi at 2.20 and C$15 on Haaland at 8.50 — costs C$30 total. If Messi wins: return C$33 (small profit). If Haaland wins: return C$127.50 (strong profit). You only lose the full C$30 if neither wins — which requires someone other than the top three to emerge, currently priced at roughly 10% combined.

My verdict: Messi is the deserved favourite, but the value is gone at 2.20. If you are taking a position, Haaland at 8.50 is the play — or wait for Saturday’s quarterfinals to clarify whether Norway survive.

The Mbappé factor — closing in from behind

Do not write off Mbappé. He has France’s entire attack running through him, and if Tchouameni misses the Morocco quarterfinal, France may lean even more heavily on Mbappé as the creative and finishing focal point. A brace today would level the race at 8-8 and flip the market. At 2.40, Mbappé is essentially a coin flip with Messi in the eyes of the bookmakers — and he has France’s tournament-favourite status behind him. The price is fair, not generous.

What history says about the Golden Boot

The Golden Boot at a World Cup has historically gone to a player whose team reaches at least the semi-finals — and ideally the final. James Rodriguez (2014, Colombia, quarter-final exit) is the notable exception. If Argentina fall to Switzerland on Saturday, Messi’s tally freezes at 8, and the door opens for Mbappé, Haaland or Kane to overtake him across the remaining rounds.

That is the hidden bet within the bet: backing the Golden Boot is partly a bet on a team going deep. At 2.80, France are the most likely to reach the final. At 4.90, Argentina are the third most likely. At 15.0, Norway are a longshot. Price accordingly.

Who is leading the World Cup 2026 Golden Boot?
Lionel Messi with 8 goals in 5 matches, followed by Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland on 7 each.
What are the Golden Boot odds?
Messi 2.20 (favourite), Mbappé 2.40, Haaland 8.50, Kane 10.0 — decimal odds via FanDuel, as of July 8, 2026 (figures approximate).
Can Haaland win the Golden Boot?
Yes — he has 7 goals and faces an injury-hit England defence on Saturday. But Norway need to stay in the tournament: they are 15.0 to win the whole thing.
