Five results on Sunday, three storylines that move the bracket, and two historic firsts that deserve their own paragraphs. Spain officially booked their Round of 32 ticket. Egypt jumped to the top of Group G. Uruguay couldn’t put away Cape Verde. Belgium and Iran traded a goalless ninety that left Group G the most chaotic table in the tournament. And in Group E, Curaçao became the smallest nation ever to win a World Cup point. Here’s what changed, and what it means for Canadian fans planning their bracket runs.

Sunday’s final scores at a glance — Spain 4-0, Egypt 3-1, Uruguay 2-2 Cape Verde, Belgium 0-0 Iran.

Quick facts before we dive deeper

Spain 4-0 Saudi Arabia — La Roja look like winners

Lamine Yamal opened the scoring on 10′, then Mikel Oyarzabal punished Saudi twice in two minutes (21′, 23′). An own goal from Al-Tambakti early in the second half closed the door. Spain go to 4 points and a +4 GD; they are through to the R32. Outright market read: Spain at 6.50 with FOX/FanDuel (7.00 at OddsPedia) — France and England both shorter on the board now.

Egypt 3-1 New Zealand — Salah delivers, Group G blows open

Egypt’s first WC win at the 2026 tournament. Surman opened for New Zealand on 15′. Zizo equalised at 58′, Mohamed Salah finished a flowing move at 67′, and Trezeguet sealed it at 82′. Egypt move to 4 points and lead Group G ahead of Belgium and Iran (both stuck on 2 pts after a 0-0 in the same group on the same day). New Zealand drop to 1 point. This was the Salah moment Canadian fans of his Liverpool years had been waiting for — and it just made Group G the most volatile path in the bracket.

Uruguay 2-2 Cape Verde — Pina makes Cape Verdean history

Cape Verde took a 1-0 lead through Pina (21′) — the first World Cup goal in the nation’s history. Uruguay surged with two in two minutes from Araújo (44′) and a Canobbio strike deep in first-half added time (45+6′). Varela equalised at 61′. Both sides finish the day on 2 points; Spain pull clear at the top of Group H. The runner-up spot is now a two-way scrap between Uruguay and Cape Verde, with Uruguay holding the slight goal-difference edge.

Ecuador 0-0 Curaçao — the smallest nation makes history

Curaçao held Ecuador to a goalless draw in Group E to take their first-ever World Cup point — and become the smallest nation by population ever to do so. Goalkeeper Eloy Room reportedly made 15 saves to keep the clean sheet. Curaçao move to 1 point alongside Ecuador (1 pt) heading into a 25 June meeting with Ivory Coast that will decide third-place positioning in the group. Germany already lead Group E on 6 points and are through to the R32.

Belgium 0-0 Iran — red card mars a stalemate

Nathan Ngoy’s 66th-minute red left Belgium down to ten. Iran couldn’t break through. Belgium and Iran both stuck on 2 points. Group G suddenly looks like a coin-flip between Egypt and whoever finds form in matchday three.

The bracket picture after Sunday

Through to R32 as of 21 Jun: Mexico (A), United States (D), Germany (E), Spain (H). Eliminated: Haiti (C), Turkey (D), Tunisia (F). The Al Jazeera knockout tracker frames the format simply: top two per group + eight best third-placed teams advance to R32.

For Canada specifically, the H standings matter. If Canada top Group B with a draw on Wednesday, the likely R32 path projects to the runner-up of Group H — currently a coin-flip between Uruguay and Cape Verde, with Saudi Arabia all but out after the Spain defeat. Either reads as a winnable matchup on neutral ground for a Marsch side carrying home-soil momentum.

24-hour outright moves

Argentina shortened from +1000 → +800 (≈11.00 → 9.00) on FOX/FanDuel after Messi’s hat-trick on Saturday. England came in too (8.00 → 6.50) after the 4-2 over Croatia. USA shortened to +3300 (34.00). France overtook Spain at the top of some boards.

My verdict

The story isn’t Spain — they were expected. The story is Group G being decided by 90 minutes’ difference, Cape Verde scoring their first-ever World Cup goal in a campaign nobody expected them to make, and Argentina shortening hard for a Messi farewell. The board is sharpening. The dark-horse trades — Norway 31.00, USA 34.00 — are the ones worth a small C$10–20 flutter before matchday three closes the door on them.

  • Spain joined Mexico, USA and Germany in the R32.
  • Egypt top Group G; Belgium and Iran tied 0-0; Group G is wide open.
  • Cape Verde scored their first-ever WC goal in a 2-2 with Uruguay.
  • Argentina shortened to ~9.00, England to ~6.50 on the outright board.
  • Canada’s path: nothing changed, Wednesday at BC Place is the decider.
